The History of Chrismon
Chrismon Service at Galilee United Methodist Church was first celebrated in November, 1997. Mrs. Clementine Graham, along with other United Methodist Women of the church, began this annual service.
The Chrismon Service begins with a Chrismon tree which is decorated with the symbols that Christians all over the world usually associate with Christ. The evergreen tree symbolizes the eternal life which our Saviour has won for us and is a background for tiny white lights and white and gold chrismons. The light speaks of Him who is the Light of the world, and Chrismons proclaim the name, the life, and the saving acts of Jesus the Christ. Chrismon is a combination of parts of two words…Christ and monogram. A chrismon is just that…a monogram of Christ. The United Methodist Women handmade most of the 25 symbols that adorn the tree.
The service consists of the narrator (or each individual) stating the meaning of each handmade Chrismon and placing it somewhere on the tree. Christmas songs are sung by the participants and the congregation at various intervals of placing the chrismons. (Picture of December 26, 2021 Chrismon tree.)
